Hookworm disease, an infection caused by the parasitic worms ancylostoma duodenale and necator americanus, is acquired through contact with contaminated soil or sand. the worms penetrate the skin and migrate to the lungs, where they are coughed up and swallowed. once in the small intestine, they attach to the intestinal wall and feed on the host's blood. this can lead to severe anemia, malnutrition, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in severe cases, death.
