Lesch-nyhan syndrome - what does this mean

Lesch-nyhan syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deficiency in the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (hgprt). this enzyme is responsible for breaking down purines, which are part of the body’s natural chemicals. without sufficient hgprt, purines accumulate in the body and cause a range of symptoms, including severe neurological and movement disorders, kidney stones, and self-injurious behavior.

What happens during the disease - lesch-nyhan syndrome

Lesch-nyhan syndrome is an inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (hgprt). this enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of the nucleic acid bases hypoxanthine and guanine, which are essential for the production of energy. without the enzyme, these bases are not broken down, leading to an accumulation of uric acid in the body, resulting in neurological and physical symptoms.
