Corpus luteum cyst - what does this mean
Corpus luteum cysts are ovarian cysts that form when the corpus luteum, a structure that forms after the release of an egg during ovulation, fails to dissolve. the cyst can fill with fluid, causing the ovary to swell, which in turn can cause pain and other symptoms. if the cyst does not resolve on its own, medical treatment may be necessary.
What happens during the disease - corpus luteum cyst
Corpus luteum cysts are a type of functional ovarian cyst that form after ovulation. during ovulation, the ovary releases an egg from a follicle, and the follicle then becomes the corpus luteum. the corpus luteum produces progesterone to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. in some cases, the follicle does not break open, and instead forms a cyst that can grow to be several centimeters in diameter. as the cyst grows, it can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and irregular menstrual cycles, and can sometimes lead to complications such as ovarian torsion or ovarian rupture.
