Cleft palate with cleft lip is a congenital defect in which the roof of the mouth and the lip don't form properly during fetal development, resulting in an opening in the upper lip and/or roof of the mouth. this occurs when the tissue that makes up the lip and palate don't fuse together properly, leaving an opening.

What happens during the disease - cleft palate with cleft lip

Cleft palate with cleft lip is a congenital disorder that is caused by a combination of both genetic and environmental factors. during fetal development, the fusion of the palatal shelves in the roof of the mouth fails to occur, resulting in an opening in the roof of the mouth known as a cleft palate. in addition, the fusion of the facial structures that form the upper lip fail to occur, resulting in a cleft lip. this condition can range from mild to severe, and can affect the ability to eat, speak, and breathe.
