Tetany - what does this mean
Tetany is a condition caused by an imbalance in the levels of calcium and phosphate in the body. it is characterized by muscle spasms, cramping, and twitching due to overstimulation of the nerves. symptoms can range from mild to severe and can be triggered by certain illnesses or medications.
What happens during the disease - tetany
Tetany is a condition characterized by muscle spasms and cramps caused by an electrolyte imbalance, most commonly an abnormally low level of calcium in the blood. this low calcium level results from a decrease in parathyroid hormone (pth) production, leading to a decrease in calcium reabsorption in the kidneys and a decrease in calcium release from the bones. the decrease in pth also leads to an increase in the production of calcitonin, which further reduces calcium levels in the blood. these changes in calcium levels lead to an increased excitability of the nerves, causing the muscle spasms and cramps associated with tetany.
