Striae atrophicae - what does this mean

Striae atrophicae are a type of scarring that occurs when the skin is stretched too quickly or too far, causing the collagen and elastin fibers to break down and leave behind a thin, atrophic scar. they are commonly seen in pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, and steroid use.

What happens during the disease - striae atrophicae

Striae atrophicae is a skin disorder caused by a disruption in the collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis. this disruption results in a loss of elasticity and stretching of the skin which causes the formation of atrophic, thin, and discolored streaks or bands on the skin. this can be caused by rapid weight gain or loss, hormonal changes, or prolonged use of topical corticosteroids.
