Ascites is a symptom of fluid buildup in the abdomen. It is usually caused by liver disease or heart failure. It can cause the abdomen to become swollen and distended. It can also cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms usually develop gradually and can range from mild to severe. Types of ascites include transudative, exudative, and malignant. Transudative is caused by an imbalance of fluids, exudative is caused by inflammation, and malignant is caused by cancer.
