Large fontanel size is a condition in which the soft spots on a baby's head, called fontanels, are larger than normal. It is usually seen as a bulge on the baby's head. It is most commonly seen in premature babies, but can also occur in full-term babies. The fontanel may appear larger than normal due to increased pressure inside the skull, or due to an underlying medical condition such as hydrocephalus. Symptoms may include a bulging fontanel, a large head circumference, and a soft spot that is easily visible. Treatment is usually not necessary, but may include monitoring of the baby's head size and any underlying medical conditions.
