Hemiplegia is a paralysis of one side of the body, affecting the arm, leg, and face. It is caused by damage to the brain, usually resulting from stroke or head trauma. Symptoms include weakness, numbness, and loss of movement on one side of the body, as well as an inability to control facial expressions. In some cases, the affected side may appear to be “floppy” and lack muscle tone. Hemiplegia can be mild or severe, and may develop suddenly or gradually over time. Treatment typically includes physical therapy, medications, and supportive devices, depending on the severity of the condition.
