Hemothorax is a medical condition in which blood accumulates in the pleural cavity, the space between the lungs and the chest wall. It is usually caused by trauma, such as a rib fracture, or a stab or gunshot wound. Symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, and decreased breath sounds on the affected side. As the condition progresses, the patient may develop a fever and become increasingly short of breath. The blood may form a clot, which can cause further breathing problems. Diagnosis is usually made with a chest X-ray or CT scan. Treatment involves draining the blood from the pleural cavity and may require surgery.
