Wheezing is a whistling or squeaky sound that occurs when breathing. It is caused by narrowing of the airways due to inflammation, swelling, or mucus. It is often accompanied by shortness of breath and can be worse when exhaling. It can range from mild to severe and can be caused by a variety of conditions, such as asthma, allergies, or COPD. Wheezing can develop suddenly or gradually and can worsen with exercise, cold air, or allergens.
