Wheezing in the chest

Wheezing in the chest is a high-pitched whistling sound that occurs when breathing. It is caused by narrowed airways, which can be due to asthma, allergies, a cold, or other respiratory illnesses. Wheezing is usually accompanied by shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. It usually develops gradually, and can be worse with exercise or in cold, dry air. Wheezing can range from mild to severe, and can be heard without a stethoscope.
