Carotidynia is a symptom of neck pain that is caused by an irritation or inflammation of the carotid artery. It can manifest as a sharp, burning, or throbbing pain that is localized to the side or front of the neck. It may be worsened by movement or pressure, and is often accompanied by a noise similar to a heartbeat or rushing sound. It typically develops gradually over time, but can also occur suddenly.
