Intercostal neuralgia is a sharp, burning pain in the chest wall that can be felt between the ribs. It is caused by the irritation or compression of the intercostal nerves, which run between the ribs. The pain is usually worse with movement and deep breathing, and can be accompanied by numbness, tingling, or muscle spasms. It can be acute, coming on suddenly and lasting for a few days, or chronic, lasting for weeks or months.
