Gait disorders are impairments in walking that can range from mild to severe. Symptoms can include an unsteady walk, shuffling, tripping, or dragging one foot. Gait disorders may be caused by a variety of conditions, such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological conditions. They can also be caused by certain medications, alcohol, or drug use. Symptoms of gait disorders can worsen over time and may lead to falls and other balance issues. Treatment may include physical therapy, medication, and assistive devices.
