Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition in which the retina separates from its underlying layer of support tissue. It can cause sudden vision loss and is a medical emergency. Symptoms include flashes of light, floaters, a shadow or curtain over your field of vision, and decreased vision. It usually develops gradually, but can also occur suddenly. It can be caused by trauma or degenerative diseases, and is treated with laser surgery or cryotherapy.
