It is characterized by a compulsion to drink alcohol despite negative consequences, an increased tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms when not drinking. Symptoms may include drinking more than intended, difficulty controlling drinking, drinking in hazardous situations, and continued drinking despite negative consequences. Physical symptoms may include poor coordination, slurred speech, and memory loss. Psychological symptoms may include depression, anxiety, and irritability. Social symptoms may include relationship problems, job loss, and legal problems.
