Polyphagia is an abnormally increased appetite for food, resulting in excessive eating. It is often accompanied by an increase in body weight and can be a sign of an underlying medical condition. It may start slowly, with an increase in the number of meals eaten each day, or it may develop quickly, with an intense craving for food. It is usually accompanied by feelings of hunger, even after eating a large meal. Commonly seen manifestations include increased hunger, increased thirst, and increased urination.
