Contractions are the tightening and hardening of the uterus during labor. They start out mild and become stronger and more frequent as labor progresses. Contractions are a sign that the body is preparing for childbirth. They can range in intensity from mild to severe, and can last anywhere from 30-70 seconds. They may be felt as a tightening in the lower abdomen and back, or a cramping sensation. Some women may also experience nausea or vomiting during contractions.
