Chvostek's symptom is a sign of low calcium levels in the body. It is characterized by a twitching of the facial muscles when the facial nerve is tapped in front of the ear. This twitching usually appears as a brief contraction of the muscles around the mouth, the eyes, or the nose. It usually develops over a few minutes and can be seen in people with hypocalcemia, or low calcium levels. It can also be seen in people with certain medical conditions such as hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism.
