Steppage gait is a type of gait abnormality characterized by an inability to flex the ankle joint, resulting in a high-stepping gait. It is caused by weakness or paralysis of the muscles that normally flex the ankle joint, such as the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. Symptoms include an inability to lift the toes off the ground, an inability to flex the ankle joint, and an exaggerated flexion of the knee joint. The gait may also be accompanied by an increased risk of tripping or falling.
