Suffocation is a feeling of not being able to breathe properly. It can manifest as tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, and a feeling of being unable to take a deep breath. It can develop suddenly, or over time, depending on the cause. It can be caused by physical obstruction, chemical irritation, or psychological distress. Physical obstruction may include a collapsed lung, blocked airway, or fluid in the lungs. Chemical irritation can be caused by smoke, fumes, or other airborne irritants. Psychological distress can be caused by anxiety, fear, or panic.
