Enlarged tongue is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. It can appear as a swollen tongue, a tongue that is larger than normal, and/or a tongue that protrudes out of the mouth. It can develop gradually or suddenly, and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty speaking or swallowing, bad breath, or a sore throat. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, such as hypothyroidism, an allergic reaction, or an infection. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
