Hair-pulling, or trichotillomania, is a disorder characterized by the recurrent urge to pull out one's own hair. It can manifest as scalp hair-pulling, eyelash-pulling, or eyebrow-pulling, and can range from mild to severe. Hair-pulling can lead to noticeable hair loss, bald patches, and feelings of shame, guilt, and embarrassment. It usually begins during childhood or adolescence, and can worsen during times of stress. Treatment may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, medications, and lifestyle changes.
