Protracted labor

(Prolonged labor, Extended labor, Induced labor, Augmented labor, Prodromal labor, Arrested labor, Delayed labor, Stalled labor, Retarded labor, Slowed labor)

Protracted labor is a prolonged labor and delivery process. It is characterized by labor that is slower than normal and does not progress as expected. It can occur during the active phase of labor, when the cervix dilates to 10 cm, or during the pushing phase of labor. Signs of protracted labor include a lack of progress in cervical dilation or descent of the baby, contractions that are too weak or too frequent, or a baby that is not descending into the birth canal. Other signs include a prolonged second stage of labor and a baby that is not pushing against the cervix. Treatment may include medications to strengthen contractions, a vacuum or forceps to help deliver the baby, or a cesarean section.
