Subacute thyroiditis - what does this mean

Subacute thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder caused by the body's own immune system attacking the thyroid gland, resulting in inflammation and pain. it can be caused by a viral infection, such as mumps, or can be idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown. symptoms include pain and tenderness in the neck, fatigue, fever, and weight loss.

What happens during the disease - subacute thyroiditis

Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland, thought to be caused by a viral infection. it is characterized by an initial phase of thyroid hormone release which may cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism, followed by a phase of decreased thyroid hormone production which may cause symptoms of hypothyroidism. the inflammation of the thyroid gland leads to the release of stored thyroid hormones, followed by a decrease in thyroid hormone production due to the destruction of the gland's cells.
