Meconium ileus in cystic fibrosis - what does this mean

Meconium ileus is a blockage of the small intestine caused by abnormally thick and sticky meconium in cystic fibrosis patients. this occurs when the thick mucus produced by the cystic fibrosis patient's defective cftr gene blocks the small intestine, leading to an obstruction of the meconium. this can lead to abdominal pain, vomiting, and intestinal distention.

What happens during the disease - meconium ileus in cystic fibrosis

Meconium ileus is a common complication of cystic fibrosis, caused by the thickening of meconium within the intestine due to the abnormal transport of chloride and sodium ions across the epithelial cells of the intestine. this thickened meconium is unable to pass through the intestine, leading to intestinal obstruction and the associated symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting, and distension.
