Congenital oesophageal web is a rare birth defect in which a thin membrane of tissue forms across the oesophagus, blocking the passage of food from the throat to the stomach. it is usually caused by a disruption in the development of the oesophagus in the early stages of embryonic development.

Congenital oesophageal web is a rare condition caused by a developmental defect in the oesophagus. this defect causes a thin membrane to form in the oesophagus, blocking the passage of food and/or liquids. this can result in difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and vomiting. in some cases, the web may become thicker and cause a complete obstruction of the oesophagus. the exact cause of the defect is unknown, but is believed to be related to abnormal development of the oesophageal wall during gestation.
