Essential tremor - what does this mean

Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes a rhythmic, involuntary shaking of the hands, head, voice, or other parts of the body. it is caused by an abnormal electrical activity in the brain that results in involuntary muscle contractions. it is often inherited and can be aggravated by stress, fatigue, or certain medications.

What happens during the disease - essential tremor

Essential tremor is a neurological disorder caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. this abnormal activity is believed to be caused by an imbalance in neurotransmitters in the cerebellum, which leads to overactivity of certain brain cells. this overactivity can cause involuntary shaking and trembling of the hands, head, and other body parts. it is thought that genetic factors may also play a role in the development of essential tremor.

  • Electromyography (EMG) to measure the electrical activity of muscles
  • Nerve conduction studies to measure the speed of electrical signals in the nerves
  • Genetic testing to identify a genetic cause for the tremor
