Pain during bowel movements is a common symptom of digestive conditions. It can range from mild discomfort to severe cramping, and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as rectal bleeding, mucus discharge, or abdominal bloating. Pain typically develops gradually and increases as the stool passes, or as the patient strains to evacuate the bowels. Pain can also be localized to the rectum or anus, or can be felt in the lower abdomen or back. Pain can be sharp, stabbing, burning, or throbbing in nature.
