Hematemesis is the vomiting of blood or the presence of blood in the vomit. It can range from a small amount of bright red blood to large amounts of dark, partially digested blood. It is usually accompanied by nausea, abdominal pain, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, and esophageal varices. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
