Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat accumulates to the point of negative health effects. It is usually defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It can develop gradually over time, due to an imbalance between energy intake (eating too much) and energy expenditure (not being active enough). The types and manifestations of obesity can vary, but generally include an increase in fat mass, increased waist circumference, and a decrease in muscle mass. Other health risks associated with obesity include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
