Lacrimation is the excessive production of tears, either from the eyes or from the nose. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, such as allergies, infections, or irritants. Symptoms typically start with stinging, burning, and itching of the eyes, followed by excessive tearing. Redness and swelling of the eyes may also occur. In more severe cases, a watery discharge may be seen coming from the nose. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include eye drops, antibiotics, or antihistamines.
