Hypoparathyroidism - what does this mean

Hypoparathyroidism is a condition caused by a deficiency of the parathyroid hormone, which is responsible for regulating calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. this deficiency can be caused by a variety of conditions, including autoimmune disorders, surgical removal of the parathyroid gland, or certain medications. symptoms of hypoparathyroidism include muscle cramps, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, and fatigue.

What happens during the disease - hypoparathyroidism

Hypoparathyroidism is a condition in which the body does not produce enough parathyroid hormone (pth). this hormone is responsible for regulating the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood, and when it is not produced in sufficient amounts, the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood become unbalanced, leading to symptoms such as muscle cramps, fatigue, tingling in the hands and feet, and seizures. in some cases, the cause of hypoparathyroidism is unknown, but it can also be caused by damage to the parathyroid glands due to surgery, radiation therapy, or a viral infection.

How does a doctor diagnose

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Serum calcium level
  • Serum phosphorus level
  • Serum magnesium level
  • Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) level
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level
  • Urinalysis
  • Kidney imaging tests (e.g. ultrasound, CT scan, MRI)
  • Thyroid scan
  • Genetic testing

Treatment and Medical Assistance

Main goal of the treatment: Treating the underlying cause of hypoparathyroidism and maintaining adequate levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood.
  • Replacement therapy with calcium and active vitamin D
  • Surgery to remove the cause of hypoparathyroidism
  • Monitoring of serum calcium and phosphorus levels
  • Oral supplementation with calcium and vitamin D
  • Intravenous calcium gluconate if needed
  • Intravenous calcitriol if needed
  • Intravenous magnesium sulfate if needed
  • Monitoring of serum magnesium levels
  • Regular follow up with a doctor

Hypoparathyroidism - Prevention

Hypoparathyroidism can be prevented by maintaining healthy levels of calcium and vitamin d through diet and supplementation, as well as avoiding medications that can cause the condition such as lithium and anticonvulsants. additionally, early detection and treatment of underlying medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases or thyroid issues can help reduce the risk of developing hypoparathyroidism.
