Cystic fibrosis - what does this mean

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder caused by a mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (cftr) gene. this gene produces a protein that helps regulate the movement of salt and water in and out of cells, resulting in the production of thick, sticky mucus that can block the airways, leading to respiratory and digestive problems.

What happens during the disease - cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (cftr) protein. this protein is responsible for transporting chloride ions across the cell membrane, which helps to maintain the balance of salt and water in the body. when the cftr protein is mutated, it results in thick, sticky mucus that accumulates in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs, leading to chronic inflammation and infection. over time, this can lead to respiratory and digestive problems, as well as other complications.
