Delirium is a sudden, severe change in mental state that can be caused by a variety of medical conditions. It is characterized by confusion, disorientation, and difficulty thinking and focusing. It can also include agitation, hallucinations, and delusions. Delirium typically develops over a few hours or days, and may wax and wane in severity. It can manifest as either hyperactive or hypoactive, with the former being more common. Hyperactive delirium is characterized by restlessness, agitation, and rapid changes in thought and behavior. Hypoactive delirium is characterized by slowed thinking, decreased alertness, and a lack of response to stimuli.
