Scleritis - what does this mean

Scleritis is an inflammatory disease of the sclera, the white outer layer of the eye, which causes redness, swelling, and pain. it can be caused by an infection, an autoimmune disorder, or an underlying systemic disease. if left untreated, it can lead to vision loss or even blindness.

What happens during the disease - scleritis

Scleritis is an inflammatory disorder of the sclera, the tough, white outer layer of the eye, which can be caused by autoimmune disorders, infections, or trauma. it is believed that the inflammatory process is initiated by the release of inflammatory cytokines from the affected tissue, resulting in increased vascular permeability, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and production of collagenase and other proteases that lead to tissue destruction. this can result in pain, decreased vision, and possible scarring.
